What to Do in Chateau de Fontainebleau
Ascend the famous horseshoe-shaped staircase of Louis XIII that leads visitors into the grand entrance of the Chateau. Once inside, you will explore each section of the original medieval structure overlooking the original keep. Each section of the Chateau is a monument of the most skillful representations of each architectural era leading to the Second Empire.
The medieval portion transitions seamlessly into the renaissance section where the Chateau experienced some of its most dramatic architectural expansions at the hand of King Francis I. This includes the famous gallery attached to the chapel and king’s apartment. Stroll through the first floor’s impressive murals and intricately carved pillars original to the structure’s ancient foundation.
Chateau de Fontainebleau Facts and History
The first castle of Fontainebleau is believed to have been constructed in 1137, which is the first recorded reference to this chateau. It was consecrated in 1169 by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket. During the Renaissance, Italian artists were commissioned to decorate the interior of the first major extension of the original chateau which nearly doubled its size in 1540.
In the 17th century, the Chateau de Fontainebleau received more improvements during the reign of Henry the IV who enjoyed yearly visits to the chateau. The king added multiple buildings including the Cour des Offices. This chateau was also the site of many royal weddings during the 17th century and beyond.
Throughout the restoration and into the second empire, the Chateau de Fontainebleau continued to attract royals as a popular site to host diplomats and artists with its many spacious apartments.
