AUVERS SUR OISE TOUR | VAN GOGH HALF DAY TRIP FROM PARIS

Enjoy a private half day tour in quiet Auvers sur Oise to see where Vincent Van Gogh spent the last 70 days of his short life.

Meet your driver-guide at your accommodation in Paris (hotel or private apartment) and leave in a comfortable air-conditioned van to explore the country side near Paris.

Auvers (population: less than 7,000 inhabitants) is a quaint village that feels like an open-air museum located 32 km (20 miles) north west from the capital. This village is also famous for the painters such as Pissarro, Cézanne, Daubigny, Corot & Douanier Rousseau who came to paint in the village and its surroundings as well.

After moving to 37 different places in 38 years, the post-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh finally arrives for the first time in Auvers sur Oise on May 20th, 1890. He takes the decision to settle there. By Theo’s request (his brother) Vincent Van Gogh, the passionate, sick and depressed artist will be taken care of by Docteur Gachet, who was also a painter, engraver and art lover (immortalized with three portraits by Van Gogh himself).

Sadly, Vincent commits suicide in a field near Auvers 70 days after his arrival at the age of 37 (he will die from his wounds in his room in Auberge Ravenoux). During his short stay in the village, incredibly he will create 77 paintings .

It is often said that Van Gogh only sold one of his paintings (“the Red Vineyard”) during his life time ; we know today that it is not necessarily true since his brother Theo managed to sell one of his brother’s painting to a gallery in London, and also that their uncle commissioned him 19 cityscapes of The Hague.

Van Gogh was an extremely productive artist: he starts painting at the age of 27; over a 10-year period of time he will produce approximately 900 paintings, an average of 2 per week. Some of his most famous paintings known all over the world are “Starry Night”, “Sunflowers” and “Self-Portrait”.

During this special Van Gogh private half day tour, you will be able to see the following sites:

  • Docteur Gachet’s home (outside) : Dr Gachet was the one who was taking care of Van Gogh during his stay in Auvers sur Oise.
  • Auberge Ravenoux / Van Gogh’s room Ravenoux Inn (inside) this room was never rented after the painter’s death
  • Notre Dame de l’Assomption Church of Auvers (inside) originally built in the 11th century
  • the cemetery of Auvers where Vincent is buried next to his brother Theo (re-buried next to Vincent in 1914 by Johanna/Theo’s wife request)

I went into this tour thinking I was just going to see where Van Gogh painted and died. Frederick, our guide, with his easy manner and deep knowledge led us through the village of Auvers and gave us such insight into the artist. I highly recommend this tour as it is a perfect opportunity to learn art away from the city. Frederick is just awesome
